GWU Men Open Big South Play With UNC Asheville Friday Night At Home (7:30 PM)
December 03, 2009 | Men's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS - Friday night's Big South opener for
Gardner-Webb men's basketball will also serve as Cleveland County
and Rutherford County Elementary School Appreciation Night at Paul
Porter Arena.
The game tips off at 7:30 pm in Boiling Springs, and will be
televised live on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network).
Elementary school students in both counties will be admitted free
of charge, and the parents/guardians accompanying those students
will receive a half-price admission of $4.
Gardner-Webb (3-2) is looking to bounce back after back-to-back
losses to 11th-ranked North Carolina and Western Carolina. Shooting
guard Grayson Flittner has been the team's star to date, averaging
a team-high 13.2 points to go with a league-best 5.2 assists per
game.
GWU has gotten 10.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game from 6-foot-8
center Auryn MacMillan and a team-high 10.8 rebounds per game from
6-foot-3 power forward Josh Henley - one of the nation's top
rebounders under the height of 6-5 again this season.
UNC Asheville (0-6) has endured one of the nation's toughest
early-season schedules, falling at Charlotte, No. 10 Tennessee,
Georgia and No. 5 Kentucky so far. The visiting Bulldogs, picked to
finish second in the preseason Big South Conference coaches' poll,
feature a talented sophomore backcourt in J.P. Primm (11.3 ppg) and
Matt Dickey (8.7 ppg), and one of the league's most dynamic
forwards in John Williams (8.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg). Sean Smith, a
6-foot-6 forward from Sweden, had 19 points and six three-pointers
at Kentucky earlier this week, and is averaging 9.2 points for
Asheville. D.J. Cunningham, a 6-foot-10 center, rounds out the
visitors' projected starting lineup.
