December 30, 2009 | Men's Basketball
AUSTIN, Texas - C.J. Hailey scored a season-high 20 points for Gardner-Webb Tuesday at No. 2 Texas, but the Longhorns used a considerable edge in size and speed to take a 95-63 win.
Hailey made 7-of-14 shots and all five of his three-point attempts, as he joined backcourt mates Grayson Flittner (12 points) and Anton Silver (10 points) to supply 42 of the team's 63 points.
Gardner-Webb (3-8) lost its eighth game in a row, with three of those eight losses coming to teams currently ranked in the top-10 nationally. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot just 34.3 percent for the game, and allowed 20 offensive rebounds, but did connect on 12-of-24 shots from long distance (50.0 percent) and got 24 points off its bench.
Texas (12-0), which received three first-place votes in this week's coaches' poll, got 15 points from 6-foot-10, 290-pound center Dexter Pittman - who made 7-of-8 shots from the floor. Reserve guard Jai Lucas, standing just 5-10, 165 pounds, also scored 15 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots from long range. Damion James (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Gary Johnson (11 points, six rebounds) also hit double digits for the Longhorns - who led by as many as 35 points in the game.
The Longhorns took advantage of 27 GWU turnovers, converting those miscues into a 40-15 scoring edge, which also helped a 21-9 edge in fast break points.
GWU will return to the meat of the Big South Conference schedule Saturday, traveling to face High Point at 7 pm ET in the Millis Athletic Center.
