Bulldogs to Face Off With VMI On Friday Night

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will hit the road again this Friday, December 11th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Lexington, Va. to take on the VMI Keydets at 7:30 p.m. in dual meet action.
Gardner-Webb (0-5) is coming off its best performance yet, as the
Bulldogs dominated the 2009 Davidson Open last Saturday afternoon,
picking up four individual wins and a total of 10 top-three
finishes.
In dual meet action, however, the Bulldogs have struggled this
season, as Coach Wince's squad is 0-5 overall. However, the
competition has not been a cake walk, as the Bulldogs have faced
off with three ACC schools in No. 20 Virginia, North Carolina and
Virginia Tech, while also squaring off against Chattanooga and Utah
Valley.
VMI is 0-2 in dual meet action thus far this season, as the Keydets
suffered a 33-6 loss to Princeton and a 45-0 loss to Rutgers in
tri-meet action on December 5th. The Keydets got two wins against
Princeton, as Ronnie Ellsworth scored a 3-1 decision at 197, while
Josh Wine picked up a 6-0 win at the heavyweight. Even though the
two teams both opened up the season at the Hokie Open, the two
teams have had wrestlers only square off three times with VMI
holding the slight 2-1 advantage. At 174 GWU's David Sweeney lost
to VMI's Evan Dill 2-0, while VMI's Vincent Gallo picked up a
forfeit win over Randall Herring. GWU's Ryan Medved defeated Mike
Burnett of VMI 9-2 in the first-round of the 149-pound bracket.
Gardner-Webb needed a big clutch win by Dustin Porter to defeat the
Keydets 20-17 last year at Gardner-Webb in head-to-head action.
GWU had wins at 141, 149, 157, 174, 184 and 285 to defeat the
Keydets. Chas Franz picked up a 16-1 tech fall win at 141, while
Austin Reece and Justin Guthrie followed with wins at 149 and 157.
Blake Salyer picked up a 6-2 decision at 174, while Velazquez won
11-5 at 184. Porter sealed the win for GWU with a 5-3 victory over
Leon Barrow at 285.
