Lady Bulldogs' Win Streak Ended by Preseason Favorite Winthrop

The Lady Bulldogs had their two-match win streak ended on Monday
afternoon, falling to the Big South's Preseason #1 Winthrop Eagles,
7-0, at Winthrop's Memorial Courts Complex. The loss drops the
Bulldogs to 3-4 overall, and 0-1 in the Big South.
Gardner-Webb fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches
to the Eagles. The Bulldog duo of Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia
was the only GWU team to win a game against the Eagles.
The Lady Bulldogs didn't fair much better in singles action, as the
Eagles were able to hold off Gardner-Webb in all six matches for
the 7-0 sweep.
Kriett came close at the No. 1 slot for the Bulldogs, but was
eventually closed out 6-4, 6-3. Kasey Ellis and Tavenner Black
were also defeated by the same margin at No. 5 and 6.
Despite the loss, head women's tennis coach Jim Corn had some
positive things to say about the match. "I am proud of the effort
shown by the girls today. Whether they like it or not, this was a
good measuring stick for where we are and where we need to go.
When they got down, I asked them to change some things up and it
seemed they learned some valuable lessons for future matches."
Gardner-Webb will face off with another conference foe on Saturday,
Feb. 21 as they travel to Coastal Carolina for a 12 PM start
time.
