
Men's Swimming Finishes Third at 2009 CCSA Tournament, Women Place Fourth

The Gardner-Webb men and women's swim teams finished third and fourth at the CCSA Championships (Feb. 19-21). The men finished third with 640 points, and the women finished fourth with 457.
On the women's side, the top story was Corey Hughey's performance in the 100 back. Hughey finished first in the event with a time of 54.95,which is the new conference record in the event, and is also good enough for the B qualifying time for the NCAA.
Hughey almost made another NCAA B qualifying time in the 50 free, but came up a mere .03 seconds short with a time of 23.46. Her time placed her second in the event.
The Lady swimmers did set a new CCSA record in the 400 medley relay by touching the wall in a time of 3:47.32, smashing the old record of 3:51.88 set by Florida Gulf Coast last year. The ladies who swam the race for the Bulldogs were Hughey, Victoria Bryant, Rachel Warkentin, and Stepheni Stadnik.
The ladies also broke the CCSA's old record time in the 200 medley relay, finishing at 1:44.34. However, Gulf Coast edged out GWU by .32 seconds to take first in the event. Amongst the swimmers for the Lady Bulldogs were Hughey, Stadnik, Warkentin, and Sarah Steadman.
Stadnik also placed third in the 100 breast finals with a time of 1:05.02.
On day three, Steadman notched a third place win of her own in the 200 back by touching the wall in a time of 2:03.64.
She was followed by Hughey, who placed third in the 100 free with a time of 51.17.
In the 400 free relay, GWU's team of Hughey, Steadman, Gueltig, and Case broke the old conference record of 3:28.52, with a third place time of 3:27.76.
On the men's side, Patrick Elerding missed the NCAA's B qualifier by .43 seconds in the 100 fly with a time of 48.93. Despite this, he did finish first in the event to take home the crown for GWU.
The Bulldogs placed third in both the 200 and 400 medley relays. The team of Samuel Woods, Collin Burchins, Elerding, and Matthew Leonard placed third in the 200 with a time of 1:32.26, which beat out the old record by .53 seconds, and Elerding, George Partin, Casey Brutus, and Woods placed third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:24.86.
GWU's team of Elerding, Leonard, Partin, and Burchins raced in the 200 freestyle relay, placing third with a time of 1:23.96.
The Bulldogs had several men place in individual events including the 50 free, 100 fly, 100 breast and 100 back.
Elerding notched another third place finish for the Dogs by touching the wall at 21.13 in the men's 50 free finals. Soon after, he placed first in the 100 fly finals with a time of 48.93.
A pair of Bulldogs placed in the 100 breast finals. Elerding led both Dogs with second place time of 56.60, followed by Brutus in third at 57.76.
On day three, the men's team had two Dogs place in the 200 breast. Burchins led the pair with a second place time of 2:04.18, followed by Brutus who came in third at 2:08.88.
Steven Caudill notched a second place finish in the men's 200 fly finals, touching the wall in a time of 1:52.10, which was faster than the previous record of 1:52.45.
