GWU's Dustin Porter Falls to No. 11 Seed in First Round of NCAA Championships; Suffers A Pin Fall In Consolation Round

St. Louis, MO – In the first round of the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Gardner-Webb redshirt-junior Dustin Porter fell to the No. 11 seeded Zach Rey of Lehigh in the 285 pound weight class.
Porter (31-5) squared off with the 11th seeded redshirt-freshman
Zach Rey (21-4) of Lehigh in the first round and found himself in
trouble early. Rey, the EIWA runner-up, struck early in the first
period with a takedown which he then converted into a near-side
cradle. Porter was unable to break the hold, which gave Rey the
fall in 40 seconds.
In the consolation round on Thursday night, Porter faced off with
Joe Fendone (28-7), a redshirt-senior from Edinboro. Fendone had
the upper hand from the start and picked up a pin fall over Porter
at 2:04 in the first period.
Porter, a three-time NCAA qualifier, finished the season with a 31-7 overall record.
