Women's Tennis Drops Non-Conference Match, 6-1, to ECU
March 22, 2009 | Women's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team was only able to claim one
win on Friday afternoon as the East Carolina Pirates left the Webb
Tennis Complex with a 6-1 victory. The loss moves the Bulldogs to
one match under .500, 8-9 on the season.
It was a rough start for the Lady Bulldogs in doubles competition
as they fell in all three positions to the Pirates. Gardner-Webb's
number one and three squads fell 8-4, and number two went down
8-1.
The Ladies turned it around a bit in singles competition against
ECU, but all six matches were decided in straight set fashion. The
only win for the Dogs came at the fifth position with
red-shirt sophomore Kasey Ellis taking a 6-4, 6-4 win over ECU's
Rocio Cabanillas.
Despite the lopsided loss, Head Coach Jim Corn commented, "This was
a tough match for us today. We fell behind early in doubles, but I
am proud of our girls effort in singles. They didn't give up and
all I ask is that they try hard, and they did. We'll just have to
learn from this and use it in our preparation for Liberty on
Sunday."
The match on Sunday, March 22 is scheduled to begin at 1 PM.
