Women's Tennis Claims 10th Match of Season, Most Division I Wins in Program History

The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team notched its 10th win of the
season Tuesday evening by defeating Western Carolina 5-2. The
victory marks the most Division I wins in the program's history.
It also moves Gardner-Webb to 10-13 on the season.
The Lady Bulldogs began the match on a hot streak, sweeping all
three doubles positions. GWU's pairing of Laura Kriett and Rita
Gouveia won a hard-fought match at the first position, winning 8-7
(7-2). The duo of Kasey Ellis and Amy Beavers also won, downing
their opponents, 8-4, at the No. 2 slot. The team of Jenny Gomez
and Tavenner Black rounded out the sweep with an 8-3 win at the
third position.
In singles action, Gardner-Webb took four of six, winning at the
third, fourth, fifth, and sixth positions to claim the 5-2
win.
Gomez got the Lady Bulldogs going in singles play, defeating her
opponent 6-2, 6-1 at the third position. The win takes her record
to 11-12 on the season. Following in form, red-shirt sophomore
Kasey Ellis won her team-leading 15th match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at
the fifth slot. Ellis is now 15-8 on the year.
Shortly after Ellis' victory at five, Black finished off her
opponent at six, winning 6-3, 6-2 for her eighth win of the
season. Beavers rounded out the four singles wins for the
‘Dogs with a 1-6, 6-2 (10-4) win at the fourth position,
marking her 12th win of the year.
The match against Western was the last of the season for the Lady
Bulldogs. Next up for the women's team is the Big South Women's
Tennis Championship hosted by Winthrop, April 16-19. The Bulldogs
have drawn the 7th seed in this year's tournament and will face off
with Liberty in the first round on Thursday, April 16 at 12 noon.
The ‘Dogs fell to Liberty, 1-6, in their regular season match
back on March 22.
