CHARLOTTE Gardner-Webb senior Devin Campbell was named
Choice Hotels Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday by
the league office.
Campbell, a 6-foot-4, 196-pound righty, had his second-straight
strong start on the mound, keying Gardner-Webb's 12-2 win over UNC
Asheville last Friday. The Greenville, S.C., native went 8.0
innings, fanned a career-high nine batters and walked just one
while scattering six singles (two infield).
Campbell didn't allow an earned run in the outing and, after
allowing a pair of hits in the top of the first, sat down 14 of the
next 16 batters he faced with the only two men reaching
during that stretch doing so on infield hits.
The two-sport standout (quarterback/pitcher) was also named Big
South Conference Player of the Week in football on October 27,
2008, after passing for 392 yards and three scores in a win over
VMI. He finished his football career by passing for 5,614 yards and
39 touchdowns in four seasons with Gardner-Webb.
In his last two baseball starts, Campbell is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA
and 15 strikeouts (four walks) in 16.0 innings of work and
has limited opponents to a frigid .200 batting average during that
stretch. He is 3-1 on the season with a 4.15 ERA, and ranks among
the Big South's best in league games boasting a 2-1 mark and
a 3.80 ERA in three starts.
Gardner-Webb (20-15, 9-6 Big South) returns to action on Tuesday
night at Furman.
