Gardner-Webb Swimming Tops Lists of Division I Academic All-America for Fall 2008

The Gardner-Webb swimming program, under head coach Mike Simpson, topped the list of Division I Academic All-American for Fall 2008 in both men's and women's swimming by recording the highest cumulative GPAs amongst Division I swim programs from around the country. The Lady Bulldog swimmers combined for a 3.62 cum. GPA, while the men finished with a 3.33 cum. GPA.

A bit of controversy surrounded the women's list as Marshall was shown to edge out the Lady Bulldogs by .02 with a 3.64 cum. GPA. However, due to some investigations by the university, the Thundering Herd did not have as high a GPA as they had originally thought and dropped below the ‘Dogs on the list.

The 3.62 that the Lady Bulldogs finished with is a full tenth of a point higher than second place finisher Eastern Michigan who combined for a 3.5. Other schools that round out the top-10 include: Duke (3.49), Southern Methodist (3.49), Rice (3.47), Cincinnati (3.47), Vanderbilt (3.46), George Washington (3.43), and Georgetown (3.41).

The men's program also topped the list for Fall 2008 by beating out Georgetown by a mere .01. The Hoyas finished with a 3.32, while Harvard was right behind both with a 3.30. Schools that rounded out the top-10 on the men's side include: Brown (3.29), Dartmouth (3.27), Lafayette (3.27), Ohio State (3.25), University of New Orleans (3.24), Stanford (3.21), and Louisville (3.21).
