2008-09 Women's Tennis Season Review
April 21, 2009 | Women's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team saw its season come to an
end in the first round of the Big South's Tennis Championships on
Thursday, April 16 at Winthrop's Memorial Courts where the
seventh-seeded Bulldogs fell to No. 2 Liberty, 4-0. The women's
tennis program finished 10-14 overall in 2009, 2-6 in
conference.
The 2009 season was a special one for the Bulldogs in a number of
different ways. First off, the Lady Bulldogs recorded the most
Division I wins in their program's history (10) by winning their
last match of the season, 5-2, on the road at Western
Carolina.
That road win also aided in the Bulldogs' most Division I road wins
in program history (5) with wins over North Carolina Central,
Wofford, Winston-Salem State, North Carolina A&T, and Western
Carolina. Gardner-Webb also recorded five home wins on the season;
which is the most since the 2006-07 season.
Red-shirt sophomore Kasey Ellis also had a breakout year for the
Dogs, recording a team-leading 15 wins on the season. Ellis
was forced to red-shirt last season due to injury. Also performing
well for the Bulldogs was senior Amy Beavers, who went 12-11
overall (9-5 at the fourth position) and 4-3 in Big South
action.
Graduating junior Laura Kriett took home the team's last award of
the year as the Big South Conference presented her with Academic
All-Conference honors at the season ending banquet at Winthrop
University.
