August 22, 2009 | Women's Soccer
CULLOWHEE, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fought hard against Western Carolina, but gave up a late goal to drop the season opener by a score of 1-0 Friday night at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs were able to hold off the offensive attack by the Catamounts until the 85th minute when WCU senior Katie Kole was able to get a shot past GWU freshman goalkeeper Samantha Rupert on a free kick to score what would be the game winning goal.
Western Carolina started off the match on the attack, putting three shots on goal within the first eight minutes of the game, but Rupert was able to prevent the Catamounts from scoring.
The Bulldogs were able to put two shots on goal, with sophomores Megan Tremblay and Melissa Malone having one each. However, the Bulldogs were unable to find the back of the net for the full 90 minutes of the match.
Six freshmen saw action Friday night for Coach Mounce's squad, with Rupert having an impressive collegiate debut, stopping four shots by the Catamounts.
The Bulldogs return to action this Sunday as they travel to Durham to face No.14/16 Duke. The match is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m.
