
GWU Cross Country Competes at Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C.

Boone, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs men's and women's cross country teams both competed at the Blue Ridge Open hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. on Friday evening.
Both the men's and women's team finished in 18th-place in the event, which included teams such as Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Appalachian State, UNC Wilmington and others.
On the men's side, which scored 529 points in the 8k run, freshman Mike McClay led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a time of 26:42.80 to place in 82nd-place overall.
Sophomore Josiah Stanton-Brooks turned in a time of 28:33.50 to finish 137th overall, while freshmen Drew Ford and Justin Loy crossed the finish line in 146th and 147th-place, respectively, with times of 29:37.50 and 29:42.00.
GWU senior Justin Cole finished in 154th-place overall with a time of 30:53.10, while redshirt-junior Patrick Williams and senior Paul Steinke rounded out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs with times of 31:46.70 and 32.56.40, respectively.
Appalachian State won the men's team title with 59 points, while High Point and Virginia Tech finished second and third with 63 and 108 points overall.
On the women's side, which scored 495 total points in its 5k event, the Runnin' Bulldogs were led by senior Laura Scott, who crossed the finish line with a time of 19:35.60 to finish in 102nd-place overall.
Redshirt-sophomore Elisabeth Sawyer was the next GWU runner to cross the line, turning in a time of 19:57.00, to place 119th overall, while senior Diana Palka finished with a time of 20:26.00 to finish in 135th-place.
Gardner-Webb sophomore Ariel Zimmerman crossed the finish line in 137th-place overall with her time of 20:31.00, while senior Lia Hudak finished with a time of 21:19.10.
Rounding out the scoring for the GWU women's team was junior Cherish Richardson and redshirt-freshman Ivana Hughes, who turned in times of 22:39.80 and 24:38.10, respectively.
The Duke Blue Devils took first-place overall in the team standings in the women's 5k event, finishing with a total of 23 points, placing ahead of Virginia Tech who finished second with 63 points and Mississippi State who took third with 127 points.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to competition in two weeks, as both the men's and the women's team will compete at the 2010 Big South Conference Meet hosted by Radford University in Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday, October 30th, at 10 a.m.
