November 20, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team will tip-off its six-game road trip on Monday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will take on the Mountaineers of Appalachian State at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off a 66-38 win in its home opener last Monday night over the Montreat Cavaliers. In the double-digit win, the second of the year already for the Runnin' Bulldogs, Gardner-Webb got double-doubles from seniors Sandra Vaitkute and LaTroya Pope and held Montreat to only six made field goals and 17 total points in the second half of play.
Gardner-Webb senior Dominique Hudson tallied her 400th career assist in the second half of the contest, continuing to add to her GWU Division I career leading total, while head coach Rick Reeves pulled into a tie with former coach Eddie McCurley for the most wins by a single coach in GWU's women's basketball history with 97.
Senior Monique Hudson led the way for GWU with 13 points and for her efforts she was tabbed the Big South Player of the Week for the first week of play on November 16th. Last week the senior averaged 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in leading GWU to a 2-0 record.
GWU's 2-0 start is the first in the program's 10 year Division I history, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will look to continue to add to that record on Monday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 3-0 versus the Appalachian State Mountaineers since moving to NCAA Division I in 2000-01 having scored home wins over Appalachian State in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10. Last year, GWU defeated the Mountaineers 70-58 at home in Paul Porter Arena, while in 2008-09, the Runnin' Bulldogs downed Appalachian State 77-62 in the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.
Appalachian State is 3-1 on the year with wins over Marshall, Campbell and East Tennessee State. However, Monday night's contest is the home opener for the Mountaineers and the first of three-straight home games over the next two weeks.
The Mountaineers are led by Sam Ramirez, who leads an ASU offensive charge that has four players averaging double-digit points, with 16.3 points per game and forward Ashlen Dewart who is averaging 13.8 points per game and shooting over 60 percent from the floor.
Tip-off for the 2010-11 home opener on Monday night is slated for 7 p.m.
