Gardner-Webb Men's Swimming Earns 8th Place Finish at 2010 Georgia Tech Fall Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Gardner-Webb men's swim team took part in the in the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational this past weekend, facing swimmers from Florida State, Florida, Clemson, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Florida Atlantic, Auburn, Texas A&M, Miami (Fla.), Emory, and U.S. Air Force Academy. The Runnin' Bulldogs placed 8th with 220 points for the three-day meet.
D.J. Hughes led the way for GWU during the weekend, placing in the finals in three separate events. He timed in the 200 yard IM at 1:56.66, the 100 yard butterfly at 50.84, and the 200 yard butterfly at 1:53.86.
Seven members of the squad placed in the finals in two individual events. Drew Ellwanger timed in the 100 yard breastroke at 56.77 to finish eleventh, and had a time of 2:09.45 in the 200 yard breaststroke. Casey Brutus timed in at 58.33 in the 100 yard breaststroke and at 2:08.71 in the 200 yard breaststroke. Collin Burchins timed in at 58.20 in the 100 yard breaststroke and 2:07.93 in the 200 yard breaststroke. Jordan Denmark timed in at 51.91 in the 100 yard backstroke and 1:54.99 in the 200 yard backstroke. Steven Caudill timed in at 52.34 in the 100 yard backstroke and 1:51.87 in the 200 yard butterfly. Sam Wilson timed in at 16:29.93 in the 1650 yard freestyle and 1:59.68 in the 200 yard backstroke. Derek Gore timed in at 16:30.46 in the 1650 yard freestyle and 1:58.76 in the 200 yard backstroke.
Denmark's time in the 100 yard backstroke set a new GWU team record.
Also earning spots in the finals were George Partin in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:44.26, Tyler Nuss in the 1650 freestyle at 17:05.37, Michael Roka in the 1650 freestyle at 17:49.52, and Saxon Simpson in 200 breaststroke at 2:19.40.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on December 2nd as they participate in the Short Course Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. The event will take place from December 2nd-4th.
