GWU Men's Soccer Wraps Up Regular Season with a 4-1 Win Over Radford

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team wrapped up its 2010 regular season slate with a 4-1 win at home over the Radford Highlanders on Friday night at Greene-Harbison Field in Boiling Springs, N.C.

The win puts the Runnin' Bulldogs at 5-3 in the conference and appears to have locked them into third-place in the overall regular season conference standings and the number three seed heading into the 2010 Big South Conference Championship Tournament next week.

Radford tested the GWU defense and junior goalkeeper Adam Garcia early, as Iyiola Awosika fired off two shots in the opening seven minutes of play, one of which was stopped by Garcia and the other by a Gardner-Webb defender to keep the Highlanders off the scoreboard.

The Gardner-Webb offense then took over, as over the next 15 minutes of play, the Runnin' Bulldogs fired off seven shots, four of which were halted by either goalkeeper Joey Dennis or a Radford defender, giving GWU an early 7-2 shot advantage over the visiting Highlanders.

Gardner-Webb's offense finally broke through in the 27th minute, as freshman Stephen Maxwell scored his second goal of the season, this one of a reflected shot attempt by fellow teammate Adam Augruso, giving GWU an early 1-0 lead.

However, only two minutes later, in the 29th minute, Radford tied the score back up at 1-1, as Awosika finally found the back of the net, playing a thru ball just inside the 18-yard box from Camden Brown, putting the shot past Garcia for the goal.

Each team had two more shot attempts over the final 16 minutes of the first half, yet to no avail, leaving the score knotted up at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, it would be the Runnin' Bulldogs who struck quickly, as freshman Chris Davis scored his fourth goal of the season, chipping the ball over the Radford keeper's head just outside the 18-yard box after receiving a pass from fellow freshman Nicolas Wrobel in the 54th minute, putting the home team up 2-1.

Wrobel got in on the scoring act in the 72nd minute, as the freshman took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity as the Highlanders fouled a GWU player in the box. Wrobel capitalized on the free chance and put the home team up 3-1.

Wrobel added another goal only minutes later, scoring his ninth goal of the season at the 74 minute mark, getting a pass from fellow teammate Romeo Kabanda and making a move past a Highlander defender before blasting a shot into the back of the net to put the Runnin' Bulldogs out in front by three at 4-1.

The three-goal lead proved to be more than enough, as Gardner-Webb held the Highlanders off the scoreboard for the remainder of the second half to pick up the 4-1 win.

The win was GWU's first non-shutout win of the season, while Garcia tallied two saves in the victory.

Gardner-Webb outshot Radford 22-12 for the match, putting 11 shots on frame compared to the Highlanders four.

Both Gardner-Webb (7-10, 5-3 Big South) and Radford will now prepare for the 2010 Big South Men's Soccer Championship Tournament next weekend, which will be hosted by High Point University in High Point, N.C. on November 11-14.
