Brusich & Kelly Set New GWU Records in Day Two of 2010 Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships

Clemson, S.C. - Gardner-Webb had two Bulldogs set new school records and had three Bulldogs join redshirt-sophomore Christoph Hutschalik as an all-conference performer on day two of the Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Sunday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Track Facility in Clemson, S.C.
The GWU men's team finished seventh-place overall with 36 total points, while the women's team placed eighth with 42.5 points in the team scoring results.
On the women's side on day two of the conference meet, the Lady Bulldogs picked up 11 top-10 finishes, highlighted by two all-conference finishes.
Freshman Ashlei Alexander took all-conference honors in the women's shot put, turning in a second-place finish with her distance of 12.86 meters (42'2.25"), tying her personal best mark of the season.
Gardner-Webb's Carrie Long earned all-conference recognition, as she placed third in the women's pole vault event, clearing the bar at 3.50 meters (11'5.75).
Also in the women's pole vault event, freshman Taylor Cook placed fifth with a height of 3.35 meters (10'11.75), tying a personal best mark, while sophomore Brooke Yeakley took seventh with a height of 3.20 meters (10'6"), also tying her personal best.
In the 800 meter run finals, freshman Ivana Hughes crossed the finish line in sixth-place with her time of 2:20.75, just ahead of fellow classmate Leah Steinke who finished in seventh-place with a finals time of 2:20.84.
The 4 x 400 meter relay unit took sixth-place on Sunday, as the GWU team of Bethany Wright, Steinke, Cherish Richardson and Hughes crossed the finish line with a time of 4:02.57.
GWU freshman Ariel Zimmerman turned in a personal record time of 5:13.28 in the 1 mile run finals, placing her in seventh-place overall, while junior Laura Scott took eighth-place in the 5000 meter run with a finals time of 18:13.24, a new personal best.
Senior Kayla Morgan finished fifth in the women's pentathlon, finishing with 2,952 points overall, while freshman Yazzming Lee placed ninth with a total of 2,698 points.
Both senior Abby Callahan (5:24.09) and sophomore Elisabeth Sawyer (5:33.52) set new personal bests in the 1 mile run, w fellow Lady Bulldog Lia Hudak turned in a personal best time of 21:02.96 in the 5000 meter run on Sunday.
On the men's side, two school records fell on Sunday, adding to the new school record in the weight throw set by redshirt-sophomore Christoph Hutschalik yesterday.
Sophomore Nick Kelly ran past the school record in the 1 mile run finals on Sunday, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:18.32, good enough for fourth-place overall.
GWU's Evan Brusich broke his own school record in the men's heptathlon, as he finished with 4,780 points, placing him in third overall and receiving all-conference honors.
Senior Paul Steinke took fifth-place in the 400 meter run with his finals time of 49.65, while freshman Josiah Stanton-Brooks placed eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.08.
In the men's 4 x 400 meter relay, the Bulldog unit of Johnathan Rucker, Codi Merritt, Stanton-Brooks and Paul Steinke placed fifth with their time of 3:24.22, while sophomore Mike McPherson took seventh place in the men's shot put event with a toss of 14.02 meters (46').
