Gardner-Webb Women's Swimming: 2009-10 Season Review

BOILING SPRINGS, NC - The 2009-10 season was much of the same for the Gardner-Webb women's swimming team, as the team continued its success in the pool, setting several new team records, finishing 8-3 in dual meets, and finishing third overall at the conference championships.
In dual meets, the Lady Bulldogs fished with record of 8-3, earning victories over Florida A&M, Campbell, Catawba, Limestone, North Carolina A&T, Georgia Southern, North Florida, and College of Charleston.
During the season, Gardner-Webb swimmers set 82 new best times, while also setting 15 new team records.
Five new records were set in individual events. Senior Corey Hughey and freshman Kim Zachensky led the way for the team, each setting two new records. Hughey timed in quickest in the 50 yard freestyle at 22.87 and in the 200 yard backstroke at 2:00.85. Zachensky set new marks in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:02.25 and in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:16.38. Freshman Elizabeth Charter set a new record in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 54.96.
Six records were set as split times in relay races. Hughey set best times in the 100 yard backstroke at 55.42 and the 50 yard backstroke at 26.09. Zachensky set new records in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:01.68 and the 50 yard breaststroke at 28.35. Junior Rachel Warkentin set new records in the 100 yard butterfly at 55.08 and the 50 yard butterfly at 24.95.
Four records were set in relays, with times of 1:42.03 in the 200 yard medley relay, 3:42.32 in the 400 yard medley relay, 1:34.16 in the 200 yard freestyle relay, and 3:26.57 in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
At the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships, the Lady Bulldogs finished third overall. The team set several marks, earning six NCAA B-cuts, and Kim Zachensky being named Most Outstanding Freshman Performer after winning both the 100 yard and 200 yard breaststroke events, setting new conference records in the process.
The NCAA B-cuts were earned in the 200 yard and 400 yard medley relays, which was the first time that the program had earned B-cuts in these events in its eleven year history. B-cuts were also awarded in the 100 yard and 200 yard breastroke events, as well as the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke.
Eight swimmers were named to the 2010 CCSA All-Conference team. Making the list were Veronica Case, Elizabeth Charter, Corey Hughey, Kristen Sellers, Stepheni Stadnik, Sarah Steadman, Rachel Warkentin, and Kim Zachensky.
After another successful season, the Lady Bulldogs will now focus on the 2010-11 season, and the opportunity of earning the team's first CCSA championship
