April 10, 2010 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb junior hurler Cindy Boomhower had a superb day on Saturday afternoon, as she picked up both a save and a win as the Lady Bulldogs defeated Coastal Carolina 4-2 and 2-0 in a Big South Conference double header at Varsity Field.
The double header sweep puts Gardner-Webb at 14-23 overall and 4-4
in conference play, while Coastal Carolina falls to 19-20 overall
and 1-3 in the Big South with the two losses.
Game 1:
Gardner-Webb 4, Coastal Carolina 2
In game one, Gardner-Webb used a three-run fifth to help seal a 4-2
win over Coastal Carolina.
In the first inning for Gardner-Webb, senior catcher Mandy Ward
reached first base safely by a CCU error, advancing all the way to
second on the errant throw. Ward then advanced to third on a wild
pitch setting up an RBI opportunity for sophomore Lindsea
Hutchinson. Hutchinson connected for a double allowing Ward to
score the game's first run and put the home team up early at
1-0.
It wasn't until the top of the fifth when the Lady Chanticleers
battled back to tie the game with a double from shortstop Jazmin
Daigle, which plated Stacy Snellings, who reached base on a double
herself earlier in the inning.
However, with the score knotted up at 1-1, the Lady Bulldogs
answered back with a huge offensive surge in the bottom half of the
fifth. Igniting the surge was freshman Jordan Arrowood, who
singled up the middle. Sophomore Jane Savage then advanced Arrowood
on a sacrifice bunt and due to heads-up base running by Arrowood,
the freshman advanced all the way to third. A single by senior
Christa Fullwood would grant her the RBI, as Arrowood scored,
making the score 2-1. Ward then stepped to the plate and crushed a
two-run homer over the left field fence bettering the Lady Bulldog
lead to three at 4-1.
It wasn't until the top of the seventh when Coastal mustered up any
kind of a comeback. The lead off batter, Ashley Pisone homered down
the left field line making the score 4-2 in favor of
Gardner-Webb.
A pitching change for the Lady Bulldogs would then ice the Coastal
rally, as junior hurler Cindy Boomhower replaced Christine Murray.
A ground out and two strikeouts later, the game was over with GWU
on top 4-2.
Murray (8-11) received the win, as the senior allowed only two runs
on 10 hits, while fanning five CCU hitters over six innings of
work, while Boomhower (1) picked up her first save of the year with
a perfect seventh.
Coastal Carolina hurler Katelin Edwards (9-7) was handed the loss,
as she gave up four runs, three of which were earned, on seven
hits, while striking out three GWU batters over 4.2 innings.
The leading sticks for the Lady Bulldogs included Hutchinson, who
was 3-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore McKenzie Morenus,
Fullwood, Ward, and Arrowood all were 1-3, while Ward had a home
run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Leading the offense for Coastal Carolina was Snellings, who was 2-4
with a double and a run scored, Cacia Pierre, who was 2- 4 and
Daigle at 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
Game 2:
Gardner-Webb 2, Coastal Carolina 0
In game two, GWU's Boomhower carried over her momentum from the
save in game, while Fullwood drove in both Lady Bulldog runs to
hand Gardner-Webb the 2-0 win and the double header sweep.
Fullwood led off the bottom of the first with a line drive home run
that just stayed inside the left field foul pole, her fifth long
ball of the season, giving Gardner-Webb an early 1-0 lead.
That was all Boomhower (4-9) needed, as the junior righty picked
up the complete game shutout win, scattering five hits and striking
out eight Coastal Carolina hitters in the win.
Gardner-Webb added an insurance run in the bottom half of the
sixth, as Fullwood earned a bases load walk to force in sophomore
Michelle Primm from third base and put the Lady Bulldogs up
2-0.
Coastal threatened in each the first, second, fourth, fifth and
sixth innings, however, Gardner-Webb managed to get out of trouble
as the Chanticleers left six runners on base for the game.
Coastal Carolina's Ashley Frederick (11-11) suffered the loss, as
the righty surrendered two runs, both of which were earned, on nine
GWU hits, while striking out six over six innings of action.
Offensively, Fullwood was 1-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run
scored, while Savage was 2-3. Arrowood was 1-3 with a triple,
while Primm was 1-3 with a run scored.
For CCU, Daigle, Pierre, Sara Maples and Alyssa Tornatore were all
1-3 at the plate, while Michelle Evans was 1-3 with a base on
balls.
The final game of the three-game weekend series is slated for a 2
p.m. start time tomorrow afternoon at Varsity Field in Boiling
Springs, N.C.
