GWU's Hughes and Steinke Pick Up Wins at Inaugural Carolinas Cup

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Inaugural Carolinas Cup in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday night, competing against Appalachian State, Davidson and the host Winthrop University.
On the women's side, freshman Ivana Hughes picked up a win in the 800 meter run, as the newcomer crossed the finish line in first-place with a season-best time of 2:18.55. Fellow freshman Ariel Zimmerman also turned in a season-best time in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:18.92, good enough for a second-place finish, while sophomore Cherish Richardson placed fifth overall with her time of 2:22.05.
GWU's Aliegha Brigham took fourth-place overall in the 100 meter dash on Friday evening, crossing the finish line with a time of 12.66, and was also the first leg of the 4x100 meter relay team that crossed the finish line in second with its time of 50.75.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Kayla Morgan, Zimmerman, Katy Milton and Richardson took fourth-place overall with their time of 4:15.69, while senior Abby Callahan crossed the finish line in seventh-place in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:05.89.
Fellow distance runner Elisabeth Sawyer placed fifth overall in the 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:00.04, while Ellie Glunk took tenth with a personal-best time of 11:31.48 in the 3000 meter run.
In the field events, Gardner-Webb dominated the women's pole vault event, taking second, third and fifth, respectively. Junior Carrie Long placed second with her height of 3.35 meters, while freshmen Taylor Cook (3.20 meters) and Bethany Wright (2.90 meters) placed third and fifth-place overall.
Milton placed fifth in the long jump event with a leap of 4.84 meters, while freshman Yazzming Lee, who placed ninth in the 100 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 16.93, took third-place in the women's shot put event with a throw of 10.98 meters.
GWU thrower Caroline Arledge turned in a distance of 32.97 meters in the women's javelin throw, good enough to place her in second overall, while senior Brie Thompson took third-place in the women's discus throw with a distance of 36.86 meters and freshman Ashlei Alexander placed fourth in the women's hammer throw event with a distance of 39.72 meters.
On the men's side, senior Paul Steinke took first-place in the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 52.37, while fellow Bulldog Jonathon Rucker picked up a second-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.66 and a third-place finish in the men's high jump, clearing the bar at 1.95 meters.
GWU freshman Bo Miller crossed the finish line in third-place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.87, while fellow newcomer Josiah Stanton-Brooks finished third in the 800 meter run with a season-best time of 1:53.19.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Chase Fuller, Miller, Codi Merritt and Van Nelson picked up a third-place finish with their time of 42.96, while the 4x400 meter relay unit of Charlie Steinke, Stanton-Brooks, Justin Cole and Colby Witt placed fourth with their time of 3:36.45.
GWU's Fuller also finished sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.75, while Charlie Steinke crossed the finish line in seventh-place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.69.
Newcomer Patrick Williams took ninth-place in the 3000 meter run with his time of 10:50.91, while fellow Bulldogs Colby Witt (4:24.70) and Jacob Hoyle (4:26.66) finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 1500 meter run.
Freshman Steven Gardner turned in a second-place finish in the men's pole vault with a season-best height of 4.25 meters, while sophomore Travis Rogers placed seventh in the men's discus throw with a launch of 32.52 meters.
In the men's javelin throw, sophomore C.J. Wise finished third with a throw of 44.84 meters, while newcomer Josh Padgett placed fifth with a distance of 38.18 meters, a season-best.
Gardner-Webb's men's team picked up a third-place team finish with a total of 91 points, while the women's team finished fourth with a total of 79.5 points.
Appalachian State took first-place in both the men's and women's team standings, as the Mountaineers men's team took first-place with a total 246 points, while the women's team totaled 237 points in its first-place finish.
Gardner-Webb will now set its sights on the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships which will be held in Charleston, S.C. on April 15-17.
