
Gardner-Webb Softball Week Nine Game Notes (Games 39-43)

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb is coming off a three-game conference weekend series sweep of Coastal Carolina and are in the midst of a four-game winning streak, the longest of the season, and will look to continue its winning ways with five road games this week.
Last week, Gardner-Webb (15-23, 5-4 Big South) posted a 4-0 week
behind the pitching of both Cindy Boomhower and Christine Murray,
as the duo allowed only two runs over 28 innings of work.
Gardner-Webb started the week off with a 1-0 win over PC in
Clinton, S.C., in which Murray allowed only two hits and struck out
12 for the complete game win.
Over the weekend, the Lady Bulldogs picked up three wins over
Coastal Carolina, defeating the Chanticleers 4-2 and 2-0 on
Saturday afternoon and then shutting out CCU for a 6-0 win on
Sunday to complete the series sweep.
For her efforts this week, Boomhower was tabbed the Big South
Conference Pitcher of the Week, as the junior hurler posted a 2-0
record on the week and also picked up her first save of the season.
For the week, Boomhower did not allow a single run over 15 innings
of work, allowing only seven hits while striking out 14 and holding
the opponents to a .137 batting average.
This week, Gardner-Webb will take on Winthrop on Tuesday, April 13,
a Big South Conference double-header in Rock Hill, S.C. slated to
start at 5 p.m., and will then travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face off
with the Liberty Lady Flames on April 16-17. The two teams will
play a double tilt on Friday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. and will
then play the third and final game of the series at 1 p.m. on
Saturday.
The Winthrop Lady Eagles are 20-16 overall this season, including
posting a 9-4 record at home. In the Big South, Winthrop is 3-3
overall, dropping its last three conference games to Liberty in a
three-game weekend series on April 2-3. The Lady Eagles are on a
five-game skid entering play on Tuesday afternoon; however, all
five of those losses came on the road. Offensively, Winthrop is
led by Taylor Wright and Pearl Coleshill, as the two lead the team
in batting average, runs, hits, doubles and triples on the season.
Wright is hitting a team-high .330 on the year with 31 hits, 12
RBIs and 14 runs scored, while Coleshill his hitting .315 with 34
hits, 10 RBIs, 20 runs scored and five stolen bases. In the circle
for Winthrop, Cari Wooldridge leads the way, as the two-time Big
South Pitcher of the Week is 11-9 with a 1.87 ERA, 17 complete
games and four shutouts.
GWU is 5-10 versus the Winthrop Lady Eagles since moving to
Division I in 2000-01. Gardner-Webb's last win came in 2008 when
the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Eagles 4-3 in game one of a
double header. Last season, Winthrop swept the three-game series
over Gardner-Webb.
The Liberty Lady Flames are 21-11 overall and 5-1 at home in
Lynchburg, Va. Liberty is 6-3 in conference play and is coming off
a weekend series win over Charleston Southern at home on April
9-10. The Lady Flames have six players hitting over .300 thus far
this season, led by Cassie Hendrix who leads the team with a .354
average. Hendrix has 29 hits, five doubles and 12 runs scored on
the season. Kelly Strickland is hitting .340 on the year and leads
the team with 10 home runs, 35 hits, 32 RBIs and 25 runs scored.
Two-time Big South Pitcher of the Week Tiffani Smith leads the team
with an 11-3 overall record and has a team-low ERA of 2.85.
The Lady Bulldogs are 3-5 against the Liberty Lady Flames since
moving to Division I in 2000-01. Gardner-Webb posted a 2-1 record
against Liberty last season, winning the final two games of the
three-game conference weekend series in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Lady Bulldogs have a number of common foes with the Winthrop
Lady Eagles, as the two teams have both played Coastal Carolina,
UNC Wilmington, Presbyterian College, Charlotte and North Carolina
A&T. Gardner-Webb is 9-8 this season against these foes, while
Winthrop is 6-2 overall. Winthrop is 0-3 versus Liberty this
season, the Lady Bulldogs opponent this weekend.
Gardner-Webb and Liberty have three common foes thus far this
season in Radford, USC Upstate and North Carolina A&T.
Gardner-Webb is 2-5 against these three teams this season, while
Liberty is 3-2 overall. Liberty is also 3-0 versus Winthrop this
season, the Lady Bulldogs next opponent.
