Diamond 'Dogs Fall, 13-0, To #9 Coastal Carolina Sunday

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina scored eight
runs in the first two innings Sunday, and completed a three-game
series sweep of Gardner-Webb with a 13-0 win over the Diamond 'Dogs
at McNair Field.
Lefty Jim Birmingham (5-1) paced strong pitching effort for
the visitors, working 3.0 scoreless innings in a pitch-count start.
He and six other Coastal Carolina pitchers combined on the
shutout.
The last time Gardner-Webb (16-19, 5-7 Big South) was shut out
came on May 16, 2008 at home in an 8-0 loss to North Florida.
The Chanticleers (32-5, 11-0 Big South) jumped out to a 4-0
lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of two walks and an
error in addition to RBI singles from Tommy La Stella, Chance
Gilmore and Steve Davis.
Coastal surged further ahead in the second, plating four more
runs, with Tommy La Stella belting a two-run home run and Adam Rice
following with a solo shot to cap the scoring in that frame.
The Chanticleers added a pair of runs in the sixth, stringing
together three consecutive doubles to push the lead to 10-0, and
Scott Woodward followed a pair of walks with a two-out triple in
the eighth to give Coastal a 12-0 lead. A bases loaded infield
single by Taylor Motter provided the final margin of victory in the
top of the ninth.
Gardner-Webb managed just four hits on the day, with Daniel
Merck (1-for-4), Zeke Blanton (1-for-3, SB), Josh Drewery (1-for-4)
and Adam McFarland (1-for-1) collecting those safeties.
GWU starter Emilio Pagan (1-2) took the loss, allowing five
earned runs on eight hits and three walks in 1.1 innings
pitched.
Coastal Carolina had 16 hits on the day, paced by Tommy La
Stella's 5-for-6 effort.
Gardner-Webb travels to Spartanburg, S.C., on Wednesday, April
21, to play at Wofford. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm at
Russell C. King Stadium.
