Diamond 'Dogs Fall 18-4 At Charleston Southern Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Gardner-Webb fell behind 6-0 after two
innings Friday, and Charleston Southern added four more runs in a
decisive fifth inning burst to take an 18-4 win over the Diamond
'Dogs.
Gardner-Webb (17-20, 5-8 Big South) dropped its seventh league
game in a row, as Charleston Southern rapped out 20 hits and used a
strong pitching performance from Anthony Markham.
Markham (1-4) scattered eight hits in 7.0 shutout innings to
pick up the win. He rolled just seven ground balls and fanned only
two, getting 10 fly ball outs on the day.
Brett Stackhouse (1-3) took the loss for Gardner-Webb,
allowing eight runs on eight hits and six walks in just 4.2 innings
pitched.
Gardner-Webb broke up the shutout in the eighth inning, when
Jon Harris drove in Jake Watts with an RBI single to left field off
of reliever Tim Flight. A rally followed, with the 'Dogs taking
advantage of Flight's control problems. GWU loaded the bases on a
walk to Stefon Morris, then cut the lead to 11-2 on a balk call.
Stefon Morris then scored from third on a wild pitch to trim the
lead to 11-3, and another walk put runners at the corners when Zeke
Blanton earned a free pass.
Patrick Dolan got the call from the bullpen in an attempt to
slow the rally, and a strikeout finally gave the Bucs an out in the
frame. Another walk followed, however, loading the bases again for
Gardner-Webb. Dolan recovered for a second strikeout, but uncorked
a wild pitch that allowed a fourth run to score - before coaxing a
fly ball to get Charleston Southern back into the dugout.
The Bucs responded with seven runs in that frame to pull away
for good.
Gardner-Webb had nine hits in the game, with Watts going
3-for-4 to lead the way. Benji Jackson went 2-for-3 to raise his
batting average to .310 on the season for the 'Dogs. Harris
(2-for-2) also had a pair of hits.
Charleston Southern was paced by Nick Chinners, who went
4-for-5 with three RBI. Tom Burkett (2-for-5, 5 RBI) Dusty Smith
(2-for-3, RBI) and Walt Quattlebaum (1-for-1, 3 RBI) homered for
the Bucs.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a
doubleheader set to begin at 11:30 am. The schedule change was made
in advance of expected rain in the Low Country.
