Clinton, S.C. - Gardner-Webb senior pitcher Christine Murray allowed only two hits, while striking out 12 PC hitters to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Lady Blue Hose of Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. on Wednesday afternoon.
The win puts the Lady Bulldogs at 12-23 overall and 2-4 in the Big South, but also snaps its losing streak at eight games. PC falls to 13-13 overall and 1-8 in conference play with the loss, as Gardner-Webb picked up the series win.
Gardner-Webb's lone run of the game came in the top of the first, as senior Mandy Ward singled to the shortstop, driving in freshman Jordyn Arrowood from third and giving the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Despite picking up only three more hits over the final six innings of play, the single GWU run was all that Murray (7-11) needed, as the senior allowed only four base runners for the game, striking out the side in both the bottom of the second and in the seventh.
In her last outing versus PC, Murray struck out a record-high 16 batters for the complete game win.
PC's Leslie Hensley (4-8) was handed the loss, as the lefty gave up one run on five hits, while striking out seven and walking three batters over seven innings of work.
GWU's Christa Fullwod was 2-3 at the plate, while Ward was 1-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Kelly Montgomery was 1-2 with a base-on-balls, while fellow sophomore Lindsea Hutchinson was 1-3, pushing her hitting streak to a season-high five games.
For PC Morgan Durham was 1-3, while outfielder Tera Powell was 1-1, as both hits were singles.
Gardner-Webb will look to continue its winning ways this weekend, as the Lady Bulldogs host Coastal Carolina for a three-game conference weekend series on Saturday and Sunday at Varsity Field. Saturday's double header is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
