Diamond 'Dogs Lose 3-0 At UNC Asheville Thursday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's bats went silent Thursday
afternoon, and UNC Asheville captured a 3-0 win in the opener of a
crucial Big South Conference series at McCormick Field.
Gardner-Webb (24-28, 9-16 Big South) falls into a tie with UNC
Asheville (16-33, 9-16 Big South) for the seventh seed in next
week's Big South Conference Tournament with the loss.
GWU managed just seven hits, all singles off of Asheville
starter Ryan Dull (6-3), who went the distance and struck out six
while issuing just one base on balls.
UNC Asheville got all the offense it would need in the bottom
of the fifth, as Cody Buch singled to left to drive in both Ian
Graham and Beau Zinman for a 2-0 lead. The hosts added an insurance
run in the seventh and Dull did the rest, pitching around two-out
singles in the eighth and ninth for the complete-game
shutout.
Seven different Gardner-Webb players had one hit apiece in the
game, which came less than 24 hours after a 19-hit, 15-run effort
at Furman on Wednesday.
Asheville native Kyle Paeplow (2-1) took the hard-luck loss on
the mound for Gardner-Webb, hurling 5.0 solid innings with only
four hits and two runs allowed (two strikeouts).
Buch went 2-for-4 with all three RBI to pace Asheville's
nine-hit effort.
The two teams will hit the field again on Friday at 1:00 pm ET
for game two of the series.
