Diamond 'Dogs Top High Point, 8-2, Friday Night In Big South Series Opener

HIGH POINT - Brett Stackhouse allowed just two hits and two runs in 7.1 innings pitched, and Gardner-Webb rallied to score six runs in the final two innings to take an 8-2 win over High Point.
Stackhouse (2-3) had a no-hitter in place through 6.0 innings, before allowing a bunt single to the second batter in the seventh. He recovered to get out of a bases loaded jam later that inning and pitched into the eighth inning before allowing his second hit. High Point (22-24, 8-11 Big South) had scored a run without a hit in the first, taking advantage of a walk, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly for an early 1-0 edge.
Gardner-Webb (22-23, 8-11 Big South) led 2-1 heading into the eighth inning, when Jake Watts drilled a two-run home run to right for a 4-1 edge. The 'Dogs added another run to go up 5-1, and Stackhouse trotted back out for the bottom half of the inning.
The junior southpaw threw his 134th pitch in that frame and was lifted after allowing his second hit - a single up the middle - and a walk. Adam Izokovic came in to leave GWU up 5-2 and - after the 'Dogs plated three more runs in the top of the ninth - completed the save with a scoreless ninth. The save was Izokovic's sixth of the season.
Stackhouse pitched around nine walks in his mound win and rode a 13-hit offensive effort for the win. Kurt Fulginiti (3-for-5, three runs) and Watts (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) paced that offense, with Aaron Miller (2-for-4), Josh Drewery (2-for-3, 2B, 3 RBI) and Benji Jackson (2-for-4) also collecting multiple hits.
High Point had just four hits on the day, with four different men collecting singles. Jamie Serber worked 7.0 innings in the loss, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs.
Both teams will tangle again at 6:00 pm on Saturday.
