Diamond 'Dogs Fall, 7-2, At High Point Saturday Night

HIGH POINT, N.C. - High Point plated four runs in the third inning to key a 7-2 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday night, evening the series at one game each.
Gardner-Webb (22-24, 8-12 Big South) had a tough night at the plate, collecting just six hits - but took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Aaron Miller's solo blast over the wall in left center.
Control problems bit starter Brock Wilson in the third, as two hit batters and a walk helped spark High Point's game-changing rally. The Panthers (23-24, 9-11 Big South) tied the game on an infield single and took the lead on an RBI knock to center by Max Fulginiti. A fielding miscue on a sacrifice bunt attempt kept the inning going, and Murray White IV drove in the third run of the frame with a single to right. The Panthers fourth run scored on a bases loaded walk before GWU reliever Kyle Paeplow could retire the side.
Paeplow settled down, allowing just one earned run on three hits over the next 4.2 innings, but the Bulldogs' offense could not get on track.
With his team trailing 6-1, Miller drove in a second run with a deep RBI double and advanced to third base with no outs in the top of the eighth. Gardner-Webb could not get the tying run to the plate, however, and High Point added an insurance run in the bottom half of that frame for the final margin.
Wilson (4-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on just three hits and five walks in 2.1 innings of work. High Point's Jaime Schultz (4-0) picked up the win in just his second start, allowing just one hit in 5.0 innings and pitching around seven walks.
The two teams combined to issue 16 bases on balls and hit four batters in the game.
Miller (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and Kurt Fulginiti (2-for-3) paced Gardner-Webb's six-hit offensive attack. Steve Antolik (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Max Fulginiti (2-for-3, RBI) led High Point offensively, as the Panthers collected seven singles in the game.
Sunday's rubber match is set for a 1:00 pm first pitch in High Point.
