BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb
announced Thursday that guard Jason Dawson would join the Runnin'
Bulldogs after transferring from nearby Wofford
College.
Dawson (Columbus, Ohio) will sit out
the 2010-2011 season in accordance with NCAA Division I transfer
regulations, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining
beginning in 2011-2012.
"We are pleased to add a seasoned
player with tournament experience to our roster," said GWU head
Coach Chris Holtmann. "Jason has been a key part of winning
basketball programs at every level, from high school to college,
and is a solid addition for our program. We think he fits very well
with the style of play we hope to employ at
Gardner-Webb."
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound combination
guard saw action in 35 games for the Terriers last season, helping
the squad to a Southern Conference regular season and tournament
title and a near upset of Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament. Wofford finished with an impressive 26-9 record, its
best season to date at the Division I level.
Dawson averaged 13.0 minutes, 2.8
points and made a solid 36.7 percent of his three-point chances for
the Terriers as a sophomore (22-of-60). His best game last season
came in a 60-57 win at Georgia, when he scored 12 points off the
bench to lead the Terriers on November 17.
He started 10 games and played in 30
as a freshman in 2008-2009, finishing fourth on the team in scoring
(5.7 ppg) and leading the team in assists (3.1 apg). Dawson ranked
second on the Terriers' stat sheet with 36 three-pointers and
ranked in the top-15 in the Southern Conference with 39.1 percent
accuracy from long distance.
Dawson distributed a career-high 11
assists in a game at Navy during his freshman campaign and scored a
career-high 16 points at College of Charleston in mid-January. He
helped Wofford to a 16-14 record which was - at the time - the best
season in the school's Division I history.
Before joining Wofford, Dawson spent
two seasons at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, developing his
game under legendary head coach Fletcher Arrit. During those two
seasons, the squad won a combined 47 games. Dawson's best effort
was a 31-point outing against the University of North Carolina
junior varsity in 2008.
He graduated from Worthington
Christian High in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, before heading to
Fork Union - where he was an All-District and All-State selection
as a senior. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.3 assists, 4.0 rebounds and
2.2 steals per game in his final season at Worthington
Christian.
