September 22, 2010 | Men's Soccer
Boone, N.C. - Gardner-Webb allowed three goals to its one on Tuesday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Appalachian State Mountaineers 3-1 on the pitch in non-conference action in Boone, N.C.
In what proved to be a very physical match throughout the 90 minutes of play, the Runnin' Bulldogs managed only four shots, all of which were on goal.
Appalachian State got on the scoreboard first, shocking the Runnin' Bulldogs with an Antonio Harley unassisted goal two minutes into the match to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers offense had the GWU defense on its toes for most of the first half, as GWU was outshot 8-1 in the first 45 minutes of play and found themselves down 1-0 at the halftime break.
Gardner-Webb's best scoring chance in the first half came in the fourth minute, as freshman Chris Davis fired off a shot, putting it on frame where Appalachian State goalkeeper Danny Free made the stop.
After Appalachian State took a 2-0 lead on a Ryan Duffy goal in the 48th minute, GWU got on the board less than two minutes later, as Davis received a pass from sophomore Jordan Day and put a header into the back of the net in the 50th minute, cutting the Mountaineers lead to one at 2-1.
Down one at 2-1, the Runnin' Bulldogs looked for the equalizer, yet it would be the Mountaineers who would score, as Harley scored on a header in the 53rd minute to give Appalachian State a two goal lead at 3-1.
GWU was able to get off two more shots in the final 35 minutes of action, yet both were stopped by Appalachian State's Free, as the Mountaineers came away with the 3-1 win.
The Gardner-Webb goal was Davis' second on the season, while Day picked up his third assist on the year.
GWU goalkeeper Adam Garcia collected five saves in the loss, as the junior transfer faced 15 Mountaineer shots on the night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-5) will kick off its 2010 Big South Conference slate this Saturday night, September 25, as Coach Setzer's squad will travel to High Point, N.C. to take on the High Point University Panthers at 7 p.m. The Big South Conference showdown is scheduled to be video streamed over the Big South Network at www.bigsouthsports.com.
