
Runnin' Bulldogs Drop Season Opener at UNC-Wilmington on Saturday

Wilmington, N.C. - Gardner-Webb women's swimming fell to UNC-Wilmington in dual meet action Saturday, dropping their season opener 141.5 - 112.5.
GWU's first meet of the season saw a number of solid individual performances for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Sophomore Faith Kempf gave the visitors a win in the 200 fly, leading from start to finish in achieving a time of 2:12.39. Kempf was followed in the event by freshman Cjay Wiley, whose second place effort in 2:12.68 gave Gardner-Webb a 1-2 finish in the event. Senior Lyndsey Roka closed well to tie for third in the event, finishing in 2:15.24.
Roka followed with a team-best performance in the 100 fly, finishing third best with a time of 1:02.15.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got another win in the 200 breast, where senior Kiah Bellows passed UNCW's Sara Smith to finish first in 2:28.07. GWU's Heather Holtom came in third in the event, holding off the Seahawks' Taylor Wilson to secure a top three finish in the event.
Gardner-Webb saw a good effort from freshman Jenna Ballinger in the 1000 free, who led the way with a third place finish with a time of 11:04.42. Wiley, another young contributor for the Runnin' Bulldogs, finished with the third best time in the 200 IM at 2:14.62.
In the 200 medley relay, Kaylee McCallan, Charity Byrum, Elizabeth Charter, and Liz Van Halsema combined to finish third in 1:54.33 to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs. The 200 free relay combination of Mary O'Doherty, Stephanie Wild, Annie Bosacco, and Chelsea Scarcliff was tops for GWU, finishing in 1:44.69.
Gardner-Webb returns home Saturday, October 29 to face off with Queens University in its first home meet of the season. The dual meet is set to begin at 10 am.
