Gardner-Webb Women's Swimming Falls in Home Opener vs. Queens College

Boiling Springs, N.C. - GWU won two events, both during the last half of the meet, but was unable to complete the comeback and fell to Queens College 93.5-106.5 Saturday.
Gardner-Webb saw a great effort from a couple of freshmen performers, as rookies Jenna Ballinger and Charity Byrum picked up wins for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Ballinger was the leader in a 1-2-3 GWU finish in the 200 backstroke, earning a first-place finish with a time of 2:11.18. The freshman from Lexington, Ky. was followed by sophomore Emily Black and freshman Kaylee McCallan, who finished in 2:13.68 and 2:14.86 respectively.
Byrum gave Gardner-Webb an important first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, as the freshman from Winston-Salem, N.C. touched the wall first in a time of 2:25.66. Fellow freshman Cjay Wiley gave GWU a third-place finish in the event at 2:30.84.
Gardner-Webb opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay, with McCallan, Byrum, Elizabeth Charter, and Hillary Leonard combining for a time of 4:07.77.
Sophomores Samantha Shelley and Kristina Grayson picked up second and third place in the 1000 freestyle for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Ballinger and Liz Van Halsema followed suit in the 200 freestyle for GWU.
Sophomore Anna Springer came in second in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall at 26.05. Wiley and Faith Kempf also picked up second place finishes, posting the second-best times in the 400 IM (4:43.95) and the 200 fly (2:12.84) respectively.
Gardner-Webb's 400 freestyle relay team of Van Halsema, Kempf, Byrum, and Ballinger came in second place, finishing in 3:42.68.
GWU will be back in action next Saturday Nov. 5, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host a meet against CCSA foes Campbell, VMI, and NC A&T. The meet is slated to begin at 1 pm.
