
GWU Bows Out to Division II Foe Queens College in Home Opener Saturday

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs dropped its first home meet of the season to the visiting Queens College Royals 123-80 on Saturday.
GWU saw standout performances from senior Collin Burchins and junior Drew Ellwanger, who each posted event wins for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Burchins led GWU to a 1-2 finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.90. The senior from Lilburn, Ga. was followed by junior Tyler Nuss, who touched in at 4:26.60.
Ellwanger, a Newborn, Ga. native, earned a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:09.74. Burchins earned third place in the event, finishing in 2:15.69.
Gardner-Webb opened with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay, as Jordan Denmark, Ellwanger, Brandon Searle, and Cole Hickey combined to finish at 3:36.38. The team of Colin James, Burchins, Cody Meyers, and Mitch Turner picked up third with a time of 3:42.56.
In the 1000 freestyle, Nuss came in second, finishing at 10:13.10. Denmark also earned a second-place finish, finishing the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.33.
Sophomore Cody Meyers and freshman Brandon Searle finished second and third respectively in the 200 butterfly, with Meyers touching at 2:01.78 and Searle at 21:07.32.
Sophomore distance swimmer Sam Wilson was tops for GWU in the 500 freestyle, finishing second overall with a time of 4:51.88.
Gardner-Webb men's swimming will return to the pool this Friday Nov. 4 as GWU takes on CCSA opponent VMI in Boiling Springs. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
