November 12, 2011 | Football
BOILING SPRINGS - Brock Jackolski scored a Big South-record five touchdowns and Stony Brook scored 48 second-half points to beat Gardner-Webb, 76-28, Saturday afternoon.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Gardner-Webb (4-6, 2-3 Big South) and was the seventh win in a row for Stony Brook (7-3, 5-0 Big South). The Seawolves will face off with Liberty for the league's automatic bid next Saturday on Long Island.
The 76 points allowed by Gardner-Webb were the most in the school's 42-year senior college history on the gridiron. The previous mark was 71 points allowed at UCF in 1992. Six GWU turnovers - including four in the second half - led directly to 35 Stony Brook points. The Runnin' Bulldogs had not committed a turnover in its previous three games.
Early on, Gardner-Webb hemmed in the Seawolves' rushing attack and trailed just 14-13 after Ricky Rhodes darted 50 yards for his second touchdown of the game with 9:15 to play before the half. Jackolski scored his second rushing touchdown from 18 yards away to put Stony Brook up 21-13 with 3:39 to play in the half - and made the halftime score 28-13 on a seven-yard touchdown catch from Kyle Essington with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Jackolski set up the game's first score with a 78-yard kickoff return on the opening kickoff, and finished that drive with a one-yard plunge for a 7-0 lead. Al-Majid Hutchins gave the visitors a 14-0 edge moments later, returning a fumbled reception 54 yards to the house with 11:20 to play in the first quarter. Kenny Little broke off a 54-yard run to get GWU in business, and Rhodes capped the drive with a 20-yard scoring run - pulling the 'Dogs to within 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Seawolves managed just 48 yards rushing and 153 total yards in the first half, while GWU - running behind Kenny Little and Rhodes - ran for 152 yards and totaled 192 yards at the break.
Gardner-Webb got a 45-yard scoring pass from Chandler Browning to Lyndon Leslie just after halftime to trim the lead to 28-20, but Stony Brook ran off 21 unanswered points to effectively put the game on ice. Essington sandwiched a pair of touchdown passes around a 63-yard scoring run by Miguel Maysonet for a 49-20 lead.
Leslie and Browning connected again from 20 yards out with 14:54 to play in the game to cut the lead to 49-28, but Jackolski scored on runs of 53 and 30 yards to push the margin to 62-28. JeVahn Cruz scored from 43 yards away for a 69-28 lead and Davon Lawrence scored from three yards away with 7:21 left for the final margin. Each of Stony Brook's final three touchdowns came after Gardner-Webb turnovers gave it possession on the Bulldogs end of the field.
Stony Brook rolled to 372 of its 505 yards of total offense in the second half, including 11 first downs and 267 of its 315 rushing yards in the final 30 minutes. Maysonet (149 yards, TD) and Jackolski (107 yards, 4 TD rushing, 192 all-purpose yards) each went over 100 yards again and Essington overcame a slow start to pass for 190 yards and three scores. Washington State transfer Kevin Norrell caught five of those passes for 82 yards and a score.
Dan Mulrooney led the Seawolves' defense with 12 total stops (six solo).
Gardner-Webb moved the football well - particularly on the ground - against a run defense that came in allowing just 77.8 yards per game. The 'Dogs rushed for 248 yards on 45 carries, with Little posting his third game with more than 150 yards this season - going for 153 on 23 carries. Rhodes added 83 yards on nine attempts with a pair of scores. GWU had 381 yards of total offense and saw quarterback Chandler Browning pass for a pair of scores and 133 yards.
James Perry III (four catches, 56 yards) and Leslie (three catches, 73 yards, 2 TD) were the top targets through the air.
Marty Patterson led the defensive stat sheet with 12 total tackles and a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
