GWU Knocks Off VMI at Home 152-102 on Friday Night

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb got its first win of the season Friday night, defeating VMI 152-102.
The Runnin' Bulldogs move to 1-2 in dual meets this season.
In its first CCSA competition of the 2011-12 season, GWU was able to win the first five events of the meet and nine overall to move to 1-0 in conference.
The quartet of Colin James, Drew Ellwanger, Samuel Woods, and Mitchell Turner got the Runnin' Bulldogs rolling with a win in the 400 medley relay, finishing first in a time of 3:39.28.
The duo of Tyler Nuss and Cody Meyers followed with a 1-2 finish in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:20.35 and 4:22.93 respectively. Nuss gained a second place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.84.
Sophomore Sam Wilson gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a win in the 200 free, achieving a season best time of 1:48.47. Fellow sophomore Cole Hickey finished third in the event at 1:53.06.
Gardner-Webb got another 1-2 finish in the 100 back. Woods touched the wall first, finishing with a time of 54.92. Freshman Colin James followed closely, touching in at 55.07.
Ellwanger continued a fast start to the 2011-12 season, taking the 100 breast in a season best time of 58.81. The junior from Newborn, Ga. won the event for the second consecutive meet. Sophomore Jordan Denmark took second in the 100 breast, finishing at 1:01.16. Ellwanger and Denmark also finished in the top two spots in the 200 breast, touching the wall at 2:14.21 and 2:17.68.
Cole Hickey gave GWU a win in the 50 free, finishing first in 22.73. The sophomore from Charlotte, N.C. gained his first individual victory this season, touching out VMI's Connor McMahon by less than two tenths of a second. Turner finished third at 23.27 for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Sophomore D.J. Hughes picked up a win in the 100 free, pulling away to finish in a season best 48.98. Freshman Zack Edgar finished third with a time of 51.52 for Gardner-Webb.
In the 500 free, Turner paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with a second place finish, coming from behind to touch in at 5:04.90. The time was a season best for the junior from Atlanta, Ga.
Senior Collin Burchins grabbed first place in the 100 fly, swimming a time of 55.00. Freshman Brandon Searle finished third in the event with a time of 56.85.
Nuss, Turner, Hickey, and Wilson closed out the meet with the meet's fastest time in the 800 free relay, finishing at 7:15.61.
Gardner-Webb will take a week off to prepare for its midseason invites, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Georgia Tech Invite and the Wingate Fall Frenzy November 18-20.
