Runnin' Bulldogs to Host the Highlanders in Three-Game Series this Weekend at Varsity Field
March 28, 2011 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog softball team will play its first game at home since way back on February 19th, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host the Radford Highlanders in a three-game conference weekend series on April 2-3rd at Varsity Field.
The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday, April 2nd, at 1 p.m. and will then play the third and final game at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb is coming off a 3-2 road conference win at Presbyterian College last Thursday afternoon, which moved the Runnin' Bulldogs to 9-15 overall on the season and 1-1 in Big South action.
Freshman lead-off hitter Samantha Meenaghan and redshirt-freshman Morgan Baker lead the way offensively for GWU, as Meenaghan is hitting a team-high .341 with a team-high 15 runs scored, while Baker his posting a .306 batting average with a team-high 15 RBIs and three home runs.
Freshman hurler Jessica Childers is continuing her winning ways, as she posted a complete game win over PC in which she struck out a career-high 14 in the 3-2 win. The bad luck bug once again bit junior Cindy Boomhower last week, as the righty suffered a 5-0 loss against PC despite not allowing a single earned run for the game. Boomhower has posted a team-low 2.70 ERA on the season.
The Radford Highlanders are 19-11 overall and 1-1 in Big South play after opening up its conference season with a 1-1 split with Liberty on Saturday, March 26th. Radford, who also has a non-conference double-header scheduled this week against North Carolina at home on March 30th, has posted a 4-2 record on the road thus far this season.
The Highlanders, who are the defending conference champions, were picked to finish first in the 2011 Big South Preseason Coaches Poll back in January.
While last year's Player of the Year Kristen Shifflett has missed half of this season due to an injury, the Highlanders are still led by returner Nichole Beall who is hitting .341 with six home runs, seven doubles and 22 RBIs.
In the circle for Radford it has been two new faces that have led the way, as Jackie Jenkins is 8-0 with a team-low 1.21 ERA on the year, while Stephanie Dameron is 7-2 with a 1.75 ERA overall. 2010 All-Conference selection Chelsea Kelley is 4-6 overall in the circle for the Highlanders this season.
Sunday afternoon's contest between Gardner-Webb and Radford is slated to be video streamed over the Big South Network, weather permitting. To view the game, you can go to www.bigsouthsports.com and subscribe or you can go to the link at www.gwusports.com on the softball schedule page.
The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs are 2-0 at home thus far this season, having won two one-run games over the Furman Paladins back on February 19th. GWU will look to remain unbeaten at home, as their next nine games will all come at Varsity Field in Boiling Springs, N.C.
