
GWU Softball Hits the Road for Four Big South Conference Games This Week

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb softball team will hit the road for four Big South Conference games this week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will face off with the Winthrop Lady Eagles on Tuesday, April 19th, at 5 p.m. in a single game and then will travel down to Charleston, S.C. to do battle with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23rd.
After posting back-to-back conference wins two weeks ago, GWU has dropped five straight games, all of which came at home and in conference play last week.
Gardner-Webb is 11-22 overall and 3-8 in the Big South with nine games to go in the 2011 regular season, with seven of those coming in Big South Conference play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have two players in Samantha Meenaghan and Morgan Baker who are both hitting over .300 on the season, and are both currently on a season-high seven-game hitting streak. Meenaghan is hitting a team-high .339 and has scored a team-high 19 runs, while Baker is batting .315 with a team-high 17 RBIs and three home runs.
Redshirt-sophomore Melinda Dulkowski, who is on a four-game hitting streak herself, is batting .298, while sophomore shortstop Jordyn Arrowood has bumped her average up to .295 on the year and is second on the team with 31 total hits.
The Winthrop Eagles, which have a contest scheduled for Monday night at home versus Charleston Southern, has lost three straight games since taking a double-header sweep over GWU back on April 13th in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Lady Eagles enter play this week at 14-27 overall and 4-9 in the Big South with five conference games remaining on their schedule.
The Lady Eagles are led by the duo of Chelsey Schoenfeldt, who is hitting .407 with a team-high six home runs and 26 RBIs, and Brittany Stoudemire, who is batting .308 with 21 RBIs. The two combined to go 6-14, with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored in the two wins over GWU back on April 13th. Winthrop's pitching of Schoenfeldt and Natalie Becker held GWU to only four runs on 14 hits, while striking out nine in the two wins.
The Charleston Southern Buccaneers have a busy week this week, as CSU will take on Winthrop on Monday night, the College of Charleston in a non-conference twin bill on Wednesday and then a three-game weekend conference series with GWU on Friday and Saturday.
CSU snapped a five-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over Winthrop on the road on Sunday.
The Bucs, which are 19-27 overall and 6-5 in the Big South entering play this week, will wrap up its 2011 regular season slate with eight straight home games.
Jessica Brock, who is hitting a team-high .317 with 27 RBIs, and Megan Lombard, who is batting .314 with a team-high 29 RBIs, 11 doubles and seven home runs lead CSU. In the circle, the Bucs have ridden the arms of two pitchers in Morgan Dowdy and Kimberly Hobbs. Dowdy is 8-16 on the year with a 3.10 ERA and two saves, while Hobbs is 11-11 overall with a 5.03 ERA and 106 strikeouts.
