GWU Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Teams Both in Third-Place After Day One at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Lexington, Va. - Both the Gardner-Webb men's and women's outdoor track & field teams finished day one in third-place overall at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, while throwers Christoph Hutschalik, Carson Sears and Ashlei Alexander picked up all-conference recognition with their top-three finishes in the hammer throw events.
The Gardner-Webb men's team is in third-place overall in the team standings with 21 total points, as Hutschalik lead the way with a first-place finish in the hammer throw event with a meet best mark of 60.81 meters (199'06").
Right on the heels of Hutschalik was teammate Carson Sears, as the freshman earned a second-place finish in the hammer throw event with a personal best distance of 57.39 meters (188'03").
Fellow freshman Mike McClay recorded a sixth-place finish in the 10000 meter run with his time of 31:52.08, while senior Justin Cole crossed the finish line in 18th-place with a time of 36:59.90.
GWU's C.J. Wise posted a 12th-place finish in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 46.54 meters (152'08") and a 17th-place finish in the javelin throw with a throw of 38.95 meters (127'09"), while Josh Padgett turned in a new personal best mark of 44.09 meters (144'08") to finish 14th in the javelin throw.
Also in the javelin throw event, freshman Jarrett Willis tallied a personal best mark of 39.04 meters (128'01"), earning him a 16th-place finish, while Tavarus Ferguson picked up an 18th-place finish in the long jump event with a personal best leap of 6.54 meters (21'05.50").
On the women's side, the GWU women recorded 19 points to take third-place overall after day one.
Sophomore Ashlei Alexander picked up a second-place finish in the hammer throw event with a personal best mark of 49.97 meters (163'11"), placing just ahead of fellow Runnin' Bulldog Jasmine Miles, who placed sixth with a mark of 44.47 meters (145'11"), Yazzming Lee, who finished seventh with a new personal mark of 43.20 meters (141'09") and Kyntoya Hansford, who turned in a throw of 36.46 meters (119'07") to place 17th overall.
In the javelin throw event, junior Caroline Arledge earned a fourth-place finish with a distance of 38.10 meters (125'00"), while fellow classmate Ann Marie Howell recorded an 11th-place finish with her mark of 33.77 meters (110'09").
Seniors Laura Scott and Lia Hudak both turned in personal best times in the 10000 meter run, as Scott finished sixth with her time of 39:01.79 and Hudak crossed the finish line in 14th her time of 42:29.33.
Gardner-Webb's Katherine Milton posted a mark of 4.95 meters (16'3.00") in the long jump event, finishing 18th overall, while freshman Kristen Hurley finished day one in third-place with 2526 points after four events in the heptathlon, picking up a third-place finish in the shot put event with a personal best mark of 10.07 meters (33'00.50").
Day two of the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22nd, at VMI in Lexington, Va.
