
Runnin' Bulldogs Post Five First-Place Wins at Terrier Relays

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs posted 35 top-10 finishes at the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday, April 2nd, highlighted by senior Carrie Long's GWU record setting mark of 3.75 meters in the women's pole vault event.
Outside of Long's first-place finish with her school record mark of 3.75 meters in the women's pole vault event, GWU picked up three other wins on the women's side on Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C. to lead the women's team to a third-place team finish77.5 points.
GWU sophomore Ashlei Alexander earned a first-place win in the women's shot put event, turning in a throw of 12.65 meters, while fellow thrower Jasmine Miles picked up a first-place finish in the discus throw event with her mark of 39.38 meters, a new personal best mark.
The other GWU first-place performance on the women's side came in the javelin throw, as junior Caroline Arledge took first-place honors with her throw of 37.21 meters.
Junior Elisabeth Sawyer set a new personal best time of 11:37.03 in the 3000 meter steeplechase event, picking up a second-place finish overall, while fellow classmate Ann Marie Howell picked up a second-place finish in the pole vault event with her personal best mark of 3.55 meters.
Also picking up a top-five finish in the women's pole vault on Saturday was sophomore Bethany Wright, who took fourth-place overall with her height of 3.20 meters, a new personal best mark, finishing just ahead of fellow teammate Taylor Cook who finished in sixth-place overall with the same height.
Freshman Kyntoya Hansford earned a fourth-place finish in both the women's discus throw event with a personal best mark of 34.00 meters and in the shot put event with a toss of 10.80 meters, while fellow newcomer Olivia Moody picked up a fifth-place finish in the javelin throw with a distance of 27.95 meters.
In the women's long jump event, junior Katy Milton posted a third-place finish with a leap of 4.96 meters, tying her personal best record, while freshman Kristen Hurley turned in a personal best mark of 4.89 meters to take fourth-place overall.
Gardner-Webb junior Sarah Herd tallied a sixth-place finish in the women's high jump event, clearing the bar at 1.50 meters, while freshman Katie Spiro picked up a ninth-place finish in the shot put event with a personal best toss of 10.15 meters.
In the relay events on the women's side, the GWU 4x100 meter relay team took third-place (49.01), the 1600 meter sprint medley relay team placed third overall (4:26.15) and the 4x200 meter relay unit posted a second-place finish (1:44.54) on Saturday.
On the men's side, GWU posted 18 top-10 finishes to place fourth overall with 67.5 points in the team standings for the meet.
Freshman Terry Davis picked up a win in the men's triple jump event, taking first-place with a distance of 13.61 meters, a new personal best mark, and earned a second-place finish in the men's high jump event with a height of 1.85 meters, also a personal best mark.
GWU sophomore Clint McManus posted a third-place finish in the men's pole vault event, clearing the bar at 4.35 meters, while freshman Tavarus Ferguson finished fourth overall in the long jump event with a leap of 6.38 meters.
In the shot put event, Carson Sears tallied a second-place finish with a toss of 13.10 meters, while in the discus throw event, Sears picked up a fourth-place finish with a mark of 41.63 meters.
C.J. Wise and Josh Padgett finished in fifth and sixth, respectively, in the javelin throw event with marks of 46.54 and 41.34 meters, both of personal best marks, while sophomore Chris Whaley picked up a seventh-place finish in the high jump event, clearing the bar at 1.75 meters.
A handful of individuals picked up eighth-place finishes on Saturday, as Steven Gardner finished eighth in the pole vault event with his mark of 3.80 meters, Galen Keene took eighth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with his time of 12:00.19 and Ferguson placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.19 meters.
Gardner-Webb posted top-10 finishes in six relay events, taking fourth in both the 4x100 meter relay (44.20) and in the 4x200 meter relay (1:33.61), placing seventh in both the 1600 meter sprint medley relay (3:49.77) and in the distance medley relay (11:12.34), finishing eighth in the 4x400 meter relay (3:46.92) and posting a ninth-place finish in the 4x1600 meter relay event (19:51.84).
Also posting a strong performance on Saturday was sophomore Andy Scates, who set a personal best mark in the discus throw with a distance of 32.78 meters, placing him in 11th-place overall, and senior Justin Cole, who turned in a personal best time of 17:35.19 in the 5000 meter run, placing 15th overall for the event.
The Runnin' Bulldog outdoor track & field teams will return to action next weekend, as some of the student-athletes will compete at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas from April 6-9th, while others will take part of the Carolina's Cup in Rock Hill, S.C. on Saturday, April 8th.
