Runnin' Bulldogs Take 5-4 Win at Radford Saturday Afternoon

RADFORD, Va. - Gardner-Webb scored two runs with two outs in the seventh inning off of a double by Dusty Quattlebaum to propel the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 5-4 win at Radford Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (27-13-1, 11-9 Big South) earned its seventh consecutive victory, and tenth of the season by one run.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first, as Zeke Blanton singled down the right field line following an Adam McFarland double to send McFarland home in the top of the second inning. GWU tacked on another run in the top of the third inning, as Jake Watts sent a RBI single through the right side.
Radford (25-17, 10-7 Big South) got on the board in the bottom of the third as Matt Hillsinger hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to send Blake Sipe home. GWU answered in the top of the fourth as John Harris hit a sacrifice fly to left field McFarland home for his second run of the day.
The Highlanders then took a 4-3 lead following the end of the fourth inning, scoring three runs off of singles by Brett Mollenhauer, Zach Costello, and Carl Travers.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh inning until Quattlebaum blasted a double to right center, sending home Benji Jackson and Daniel Merck, giving the 'Dogs the 5-4 advantage.
The Gardner-Webb bullpen held down the Highlanders the rest of the way as relievers Erik Heiligenstadt (2.0 innings), Jeff Howell (0.2 innings) and Brett Stackhouse (0.1 innings) combined to allow no runs or hits to seal the win.
Starter Kyle Paeplow (3-1) earned the win, hurling 6.0 innings. Stackhouse was awarded his first save of the season.
Gardner-Webb had nine hits on the day, paced by Jackson (2-for-3) and McFarland (2-for-4).
Sipe (2-for-3) and Travers (2-for-5, 1 RBI) led Radford's eight-hit afternoon. Starter Mark Peterson (4-2) was pegged with the loss, allowing five runs in 7.2 innings of work.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to complete the sweep of Radford Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
