Runnin' Bulldogs Fall, 9-2, At Winthrop Thursday Night

HILL, S.C. - Gardner-Webb managed just three hits and saw Winthrop
put together a pair of three-run innings as the Eagles topped the
'Dogs, 9-2, Thursday night in Game One of a crucial Big South
Conference series.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (29-20-1, 13-12 Big South) have lost seven of their last eight games and fell one-game behind the Eagles (26-27, 14-11 Big South) for fourth position in the league standings. GWU is now tied with Radford for fifth place in the standings.
The Gardner-Webb bats were held silent for much of the night by Winthrop starter Tyler Mizenko (W, 5-2), who struck out five of the first six batters he faced and finished by allowing one unearned run on two hits in 7.0 innings of work. He retired 19 batters in a row heading into the eighth inning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 in the third inning, when an error led to a pair of runs - one unearned - for Winthrop. The Eagles scored three more runs in the fourth to post a 5-0 lead, and staged a two-out rally in the fifth put the game out of reach. The Eagles got back-to-back, two-out singles from Austen Barber and Tyler Cook and a walk to Cam Walters - and Adam Gliebe cleared the bases with a double to left field for an 8-0 lead.
Winthrop pushed across another run in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-0 lead, before John Harris' RBI single in the top of the eighth erased the shutout. A fielder's choice RBI by Aaron Miller in the top of the ninth made the score 9-2.
Winthrop managed 13 hits in the game, with Gliebe going 2-for-3 with four RBI to pace that effort. Gardner-Webb had three different players with three singles in the game - Jake Watts, Harris and Adam McFarland. The 'Dogs had three errors in the game defensively.
Pagan (3-3) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits (four strikeouts) in 6.0 innings pitched.
Mizenko fanned eight batters on the night in his victory, and was followed by reliever Tommy Lawrence, who fanned five batters and allowed just one hit over the final two innings.
The two teams will meet for Game Two on Friday night at 6:00 pm at the Winthrop Ballpark.
