Runnin' Bulldogs Come Alive For 6-1 Win At Winthrop In Regular Season Finale

HILL, S.C. - Gardner-Webb pounded out 14 hits and senior pitcher
Kyle Paeplow turned in a clutch mound performance to top Winthrop,
6-1, Saturday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (30-21-1, 14-13 Big South) finished the season in a three-way with with VMI and Radford for fifth in the Big South standings. GWU posted a 5-1 composite record against the Highlanders and Keydets, which would give the 'Dogs the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big South Conference Tournament.
After seeing its once red-hot bats go cold for the month of May, Gardner-Webb shook off the rust Saturday and took a 2-0 lead in the third.
Zeke Blanton singled to lead off the inning, and scored on Daniel Merck's double. Adam McFarland followed with an RBI single to right to bring home Merck, before Winthrop (26-27, 15-12 Big South) could get back into the dugout.
Benji Jackson drove in Aaron Miller with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Dusty Quattlebaum belted a solo home run to the opposite field in the fifth for a 4-0 Gardner-Webb advantage.
Winthrop trimmed the lead to 4-1 in the sixth, but Gardner-Webb would not give in - getting an RBI single from Brad Collins in the seventh and another run when Aaron Miller scored on a bases-loaded passed ball in the eighth for what would be the final margin.
Senior lefty Kyle Paeplow (4-3) was magnificent on the mound Saturday, hurling 6.2 innings and allowing just two hits and a run with four strikeouts. Brett Stackhouse (0.2 IP) and Adam Izokovic (1.2 IP) came on to finish the job.
Miller, also a senior, was the top 'Dog at the plate Saturday, leading Gardner-Webb with a 4-for-4 effort and two runs scored. Jake Watts (2-for-5) and Blanton (2-for-4) also had multiple hits in the game.
Winthrop starter Matteo D'Angelo (4-8) took the loss, allowing three runs on eighth hits in 4.0 innings of work. Cam Walters and Leighton Daniels had the Eagles' two hits, with Adam Gliebe driving in the lone run with a sacrifice fly.
Official seedings for the Big South Conference Tournament will be announced later this weekend.
