LEXINGTON,
Va. - Gardner-Webb first baseman Dusty Quattlebaum continued to
pile up postseason academic honors Wednesday, as he was named Big
South Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year during the
awards ceremony at the 2011 Royal Purple Big South Conference
Tournament.
Quattlebaum is the second Runnin' Bulldog to earn the award in baseball in the past three seasons, joining outfielder Jon Ahearn (2009).
Quattlebaum (Boiling Springs, N.C. / Crest HS) has compiled a 4.00 cumulative GPA in his major of sports management, and has been a standout on the field for the Runnin' Bulldogs as well. He was named first-team Capital One Academic All-America on Tuesday, becoming the first baseball player to earn that distinction in school history.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound slugger has caught fire during the ongoing tournament, batting .571 (4-of-7) with a home run, double and four RBI in two games. The season overall, Quattlebaum is batting .330 with a league-best 24 doubles. He leads the 'Dogs with six home runs and ranks second on the team with 47 RBI.
He was twice honored as Big South Conference Player of the Week, driving in nine runs during a four-game week in each of those weeks, and was named NCBWA National Hitter of the Week following a stellar, four-game stretch against Holy Cross and St. John's in March. Quattlebaum ranks sixth nationally in doubles per game.
Coastal Carolina's Tommy LaStella was named Player of the Year, Chanticleers' southpaw Matt Rein was named Pitcher of the Year, Charleston Southern skipper Stuart Lake was named Coach of the Year and Presbyterian designated hitter Brad Zebedis was named Freshman of the Year during the awards ceremony Wednesday.
Gardner-Webb (31-22-1) will battle No. 6 seed Radford on Thursday morning at 11:00 am in an elimination game at Gray-Minor Stadium.
