GWU's Meenaghan Named to 2011 NCCSIA All-State Softball Team
June 13, 2011 | Softball
Durham, N.C. - Gardner-Webb freshman Samantha Meenaghan was one of 12 student-athletes from seven different schools across the state of North Carolina to earn a spot on the 2011 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Softball Team.
Meenaghan, who was selected as the 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the first-team all-conference team, was named to the NCCSIA All-State Team as a utility player having played at both second-base and third-base on the year. Meenaghan topped the team with a .360 batting average, 58 hits, 26 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.
Meenaghan's selection to the All-State University Division Softball Team marks the third straight year that Gardner-Webb has had a player on the state team, as GWU graduate Christa Fullwood was named to the all-state team in both 2009 and 2010.
The Elon Phoenix led the way with three student-athletes on the team, followed by Appalachian State, Charlotte, and UNCG with a pair of honorees each. Campbell, East Carolina and Gardner-Webb filled out the 2011 all-state squad with one representative each.
The eighth-annual team consists of NCAA Division I student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted the nominees and NCCSIA members voted for the all-state team, which consists of two pitchers, one catcher, four infielders, three outfielders, one designated player and one utility player.
Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from North Carolina's NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions for the purpose of promoting college athletics in the state. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina whose responsibilities include sports information.
NCCSIA selects all-state teams in the university (NCAA Division I) and college (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and baseball.
