Men's Soccer to Compete at the UAB 'Soccer for a Cure' Classic this Weekend
September 14, 2011 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team will travel down to Birmingham, Alabama this weekend to take part in the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic hosted by the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Friday and Sunday, September 16 and 18th.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 1-2-2 on the year, are coming off a weekend in which GWU posted a scoreless 0-0 double-overtime draw with Appalachian State on Friday and then suffered a 3-0 loss to Davidson, who was then ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA South Region poll, on Sunday night.
After scoring three goals in its season opening win over Brevard back on August 28th, the Runnin' Bulldogs have hit a scoring drought, having scored only two goals over its last four matches, both of which came by way of sophomore forward Chris Davis.
For the first time in over two weeks, the Runnin' Bulldogs will play an opponent that is not a member of the Southern Conference, which might be a good change seeing as GWU went 0-2-2 over its last four matches versus the SoCon.
This weekend will be a weekend of firsts for Gardner-Webb, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will play their first ever match against both Wisconsin-Milwaukee and VCU.
On Friday night, at 5 p.m. central time (6 p.m. ET), the Runnin' Bulldogs will kick-off the tournament against the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers.
The Panthers are 3-2 thus far this season, having posted wins at home versus Western Illinois, Western Michigan and Marquette. Milwaukee, who was picked to finish third in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, are led by Gerardo Saavedra and Robert Refai who each have three goals apiece on the year.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. central time (1 p.m. ET) to take on the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
The Rams are 5-1 on the year, including going 1-0 in neutral site contests. VCU has wins over Navy, Georgetown, Richmond, Elon and USC Upstate, yet its lone loss came in double-overtime to Big South Conference member Coastal Carolina last weekend. Jason Johnson, who has tallied four goals on the year, and Yoram Mwila, who has recorded three goals on one assist for the season, lead VCU.
Live stats for both matches can be accessed by going to the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic Tournament Central page at: http://uabsports.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/11-soccer-for-cure-tournament.html.
