September 26, 2011 | Men's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team will remain on the road for the fifth straight week this week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will do battle with the Clemson Tigers and the Campbell Fighting Camels on the pitch.
The two road contests this week marks the ninth and 10th straight road matches for GWU this season, as the Runnin' Bulldogs have not played at home since a 3-0 win over Brevard College on August 28th.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 3-4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big South thus far this season, having suffered losses to No. 25 Coastal Carolina and UNC Greensboro this past weekend.
In GWU's two losses, junior midfielder John Sargent contributed the only goal for the weekend, as he has scored three goals over the Runnin' Bulldogs last for matches.
Gardner-Webb will open up play this week on Tuesday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will do battle with the Clemson Tigers at 7 p.m. in Clemson, S.C.
GWU, who defeated Clemson 1-0 back in 2009, is 1-8-0 overall versus the Tigers on the pitch, including a second round NCAA Championship Tournament loss back in 2006.
The Tigers are 2-4 overall on the season and 1-2 in the ACC, having suffered losses to UAB, Wake Forest, Duke and No. 14 Charlotte. Clemson, who has posted wins over South Carolina and N.C. State, have scored seven goals over their first five matches, yet have struggled to stop their opponents from scoring having allowed 12 goals over that same span.
On Saturday night, Gardner-Webb will renew its rivalry on the pitch with the newest member of the Big South Conference the Campbell Fighting Camels at 7 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C.
Gardner-Webb is 2-6-1 all-time versus Campbell with most of those matches coming in Atlantic Sun Conference play from 2001 to 2007.
Campbell, who defeated GWU 6-1 in the two teams' last meeting back in 2007, enters play this week at 3-4-1 overall. The Camels, who open up its Big South slate on Wednesday night at home versus Radford, are 0-2 at home thus far this season and have dropped its last four matches.
GWU and Campbell have played two common opponents thus far in 2011 in Wofford and Davidson. The Runnin' Bulldogs went 0-2, while Campbell posted a 1-1 record against these two common Southern Conference foes this season.
