October 02, 2012 | Volleyball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team will open up its road portion of its 2012 Big South Conference slate this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to South Carolina to take on Presbyterian on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in two key Big South Conference match ups.
Gardner-Webb (7-13, 2-1 Big South) is off to its best start in conference play since beginning the 2008 season 2-1, which was its first year in the Big South. GWU has won three of its last four matches, with two of those wins coming in conference play, however, all of those wins came at home in the friendly confines of Paul Porter Arena.
In fact, GWU, who is 0-5 this season in true road matches, has struggled in conference play on the road since joining the Big South back in 2008, as the Runnin' Bulldogs are 3-28 in true road matches in conference play.
However, GWU is coming off a strong week last week, in which junior middle blocker Tyler Cockrell was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week and the Runnin' Bulldogs went 2-1 overall with wins over USC Upstate and Radford.
GWU will open up play this week with a Big South showdown with Presbyterian on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
The Lady Blue Hose of PC are 5-13 overall and 2-1 in Big South action thus far this season. PC has won three out of its last four matches, having posted wins over Georgetown, Charleston Southern and Winthrop during that stretch. Presbyterian has a balanced attack, as five players have posted over 100 kills thus far this year led by Presley Mabrey's team-high 172 kills.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will then turn around to do battle with the Winthrop Lady Eagles at 2 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Lady Eagles of Winthrop are 7-10 overall on the year and 1-2 in conference play having dropped each of its last two contests to Charleston Southern and Presbyterian. Winthrop, who will host UNC Asheville on Friday night, is 4-2 at home thus far this season with wins over Appalachian State, N.C. A&T, Mercer and Western Carolina. Winthrop is led by Jennica Mullins, who leads the team in both kills with 139 and blocks with 80 on the season.
