Parker Wins Singles Draw as Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Competes at Carolinas Invitational

Rock Hill, S.C. - Senior Matthew Parker used four singles wins to win in his draw with an undefeated singles record on the weekend, leading GWU men's tennis to an impressive showing at the Carolinas Invitational, hosted by Winthrop University Nov. 2-4.

Parker (Marietta, Ga.) went 4-0 in singles action during the Friday - Sunday Invitational, first cruising for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Winthrop's JD O'Brien. Against Campbell's Joseph Baro, Parker made it two wins in a row, winning 6-2, 6-2.

Versus Fightin' Camel Garrison Kinney, Parker cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win, earning a matchup with Winthrop's Michael Chen. Parker won that match to improve to 4-0 in singles play for the weekend.

Fellow senior Roman Piftor also had a stellar weekend. The Tashkent, Uzbekistan native advanced past Presbyterian's Daniel Bruce after earning a first round pass thanks to a bye. Against Winthrop's Dylan Comerford, Piftor came out strong, winning the first set 6-1. Comerford stormed back, however, as Piftor fell in a tough match 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 to the eventual draw champion.

After advancing through his first round matchup with Presbyterian's Gonzalo Asis, sophomore Joao Poli (Londrina, Brazil) came back to defeat Campbell's Rik Van Gerwen 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, earning a bout with Steven Patrick of Winthrop. Poli dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 duel with the Eagles' Patrick.

Fellow sophomore Ernest Alberch fought to a first round win at the Carolinas Invitational. The native of Torello, Spain outlasted UNC Greensboro's Cameron Smith by a 6-3, 7-6 (3) margin to advance to the second round of his draw, before eventually dropping a 6-0, 6-2 match to Campbell's Steven Billington.

In the Quarterfinal Playoff round, Alberch knocked off Blue Hose player Daniel Bruce 6-2, 6-3 to make it two singles wins for the sophomore on the weekend.

Pitted against Presbyterian's Nathan Crocker, Gardner-Webb sophomore Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) earned a 6-2, 6-1 singles win to advance. Dempsey would drop his next match against the draw runner-up Chen from Winthrop.

Dempsey did earn his second win of the weekend in the Quarterfinals, defeating Winthrop's Chase Altieri by a 6-0, 6-2 margin.

Gardner-Webb men's tennis' next scheduled match comes in the Spring opener, as the Runnin' Bulldogs are set to take on UNC in a road match on Saturday, January 19 at 5:00 p.m.
