Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Battles to 5-2 Home Win Over Wofford Tuesday

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The freshmen duo of Joao Poli/Brendan Dempsey held on for the deciding doubles match by a score of 9-7 as the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to put away visiting Wofford 5-2 at home on Tuesday.
With the win, GWU improves to 3-7 (0-1 Big South) this season.
To gain the first point of the match, GWU needed a win at either No. 1 or No. 3 after the tandem of Ernest Alberch/Matthew Parker took an 8-3 win at the No. 2 position. Wofford's Tinus Van Wyk/Rob Galloway rallied to win 8-6 at the No. 1 slot, leaving Dempsey and Poli in need of a late stand to take the win at No. 3.
The freshmen did just that, outlasting a furious rally from the Terriers' duo of Drew Superstein/Tom Wood by a 9-7 margin to put GWU up 1-0 early.
The Runnin' Bulldogs stayed on top with wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles. Junior Roman Piftor (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Galloway, and junior Adam Knutsson-Sundblad (Gothenburg, Sweden) won 6-2, 6-3 over Wofford's Jackson Keith to give Gardner-Webb command of the match.
After Wofford secured a win at No. 5 from Wood, Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) finished a stirring rally for a come from behind win over the Terrier's Walker Heffron, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to secure the match.
Freshman Ernest Alberch (Torello, Spain) earned a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win over Superstein to win at the No. 2 position.
GWU turns around tomorrow, facing Brevard on the road. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
