Hilton Head, S.C. - In its final match at the Spring Tennisfest, Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team was defeated by the Bulls of Buffalo by a score of 4-2 Tuesday.
The match did not include doubles due to inclement weather.
Gardner-Webb got singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, but dropped close decisions at No. 1 and No. 4 singles against a talented Buffalo squad.
Freshman Alice Hopkins (Birmingham, England) battled back to defeat Buffalo's Marta Stoyanova, taking a 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Hopkins, 12-1 in singles play this season, has won 10 straight at the No. 2 singles slot, dating back to a win over Presbyterian's Greer Ransom on February 15.
Senior Ioana Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) took the win at No. 3 singles, besting the Bull's Tamara Markovic 6-4, 6-4.
GWU opens a four-match homestand this weekend when it hosts Big South counterpart Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
