
Week Eight Notes: GWU Hits the Road for Big South Conference Contests at PC and VMI

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team will attempt to snap its current five-match winless streak this week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will play two Big South Conference foes in Presbyterian College and VMI on the road over a five day span.
Gardner-Webb will open up play this week on Tuesday night, October 15th, against the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. in Clinton, S.C., before trekking north to face off with the VMI Keydets on Saturday afternoon, October 19th, at 2:30 p.m. at Patchin Field in Lexington, Va.
GWU is 4-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the Big South on the season after suffering its first home loss of the year in the 2-1 overtime loss to Longwood last Saturday night.
Each of GWU's last three matches have gone beyond the 90 minutes of play, as the Runnin' Bulldogs played N.C. State to a double overtime draw and then fell to both Radford and Longwood 2-1 in the first overtime period.
Gardner-Webb, who is 2-2-1 in overtime matches on the year, is only 1-3-1 on the season when scoring one goal for the match, and only 1-6-1 on the season when scoring less than two goals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have gone winless over its last five matches after posting back-to-back wins over Liberty and Mercer and is 0-2-1 thus far in the month of October.
Denzel Clarke, who leads the team with eight goals on the season, has scored the last three goals for GWU with one each over its last three contests. Clarke, who leads the Big South with 41 shots on the season and is second in the League in both goals (8) and goals per game (0.73), is also ranked 11th in the nation in total goals (8) and 12th in the nation in goals per game (0.73).
Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Swan is ranked 12th in the nation in total saves (59) and 14th in saves per game (5.36).
The Blue Hose of Presbyterian College are 3-7-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Big South play entering action this week.
After starting the year off at 2-0, PC loss six straight and seven of its last eight contests with the lone win coming over VMI on October 5th.
Josh Carter and Ignacio Monchetti lead the PC offensive attack, as the two have combined for seven of PC's 12 goals on the year. However, the Blue Hose have been outscored 30-12 on the year overall.
The VMI Keydets, who will take on Longwood on Wednesday night, October 16th, enter play this week at 1-9-1 overall and 1-4 in the Big South with their lone win of the season coming on the road at Liberty, 3-2, on September 24th.
The Keydets are 0-1-1 at home so far this season having played NJIT to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on September 3rd.
VMI has been outscored 36-9 on the season and has been outshot 243-77 on the year.
